While other stars refrain from making statements that can be later re-interpreted and/or taken out of context, the British actress Rachel Weisz can't even hold her tongue when it comes to remarks that are one hundred per cent bound to be criticized.
'The Fountain', in which Weisz stars opposite Hugh Jackman, premiered over the weekend and little did she imagine that the comments she made while on the red carpet will create such a media frenzy as they did. In fact, the response was so strong that several health organizations are urging her to release a public statement to take back all she said.
When a more nosy reporter asked the actress how she felt while she was pregnant with her son (she recently gave birth) and how she managed to cope with all the restrictions, the star said that she doesn't believe that alcohol can be that bad after the third month of pregnancy. The 35-year-old stunning beauty revealed that she liked to have a glass of wine from now and then when she was expecting and, even more, she loved to do that as it made her giddy.
'Personally I do [believe it's acceptable for expectant mothers to drink]. They say not in the first three months though, but I think after that it's fine. I mean in Europe they drink it', were the exact words that sparked the outrage. And the response did not fail to come, once the foetal alcohol syndrome specialist Dr. Raja Mukherjee of St. George's Hospital Medical School in London voiced his concern.
'If Rachel Weisz has drunk during her pregnancy and the baby is fine then that's just pure luck. The problem is that you don't know who is at risk and who is not. It doesn't mean that anyone who has drunk alcohol is going to be affected but because we cannot predict, then it is safer to avoid it. There is a risk throughout your whole pregnancy. There is potential harm to the unborn baby's brain at any point and that is fact.', the doctor said, calling the star's comments 'ill-informed' and 'dangerous'.
