The developers at Radical working on Prototype 2 have made it clear that the race of the main character of the game does not in any way change his attitude towards life and the rationalization behind hid in-game actions.
Ken Rosman, who is the leader of the
Radical development studio, told the Official PlayStation Magazine that, “We started off with an amalgamation of Hugh Jackman and Clint Eastwood, and the resulting render looked remarkably similar to James Marsden – so we were like ‘Okay, scratch that one out’. As we were going, there was something about a concept sketch of some ethnicity or other that wasn’t just the the generic Caucasian guy and we were all drawn to it.”
He added, “We started riffing on that character and ended up with Heller. It’s more about conveying the stature, the position and swagger of a hero. Skin colour is obviously involved and that’s where we ended up but it’s not where we started.”
Prototype 2 will again take gamers to New York, where the events of the first game have resulted in even more of the city being quarantined, with the new area called New York Zero.
Alex Mercer, the protagonist of the first title in the series, is one the run and seen as a ghostly apparition which hits out at the Army and the Blackwatch without any warning.
New protagonist James Heller has similar abilities to Mercer, able to consume the memories of other people and shift to different forms, but he is also different, assuming more of an organic looks with tendrils and smoother movement.
The game will focus more on world exploration and will reveal more backstory about the virus and its effects on humans.
Prototype 2 will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 and currently has a North American launch date of April 24, 2012.
