Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has just released a new software upgrade for its high-end HTC HD2 handset. The new solution is available for download as a ROM upgrade and is meant for the HD2 devices in the UK connected to Vodafone's network. However, the handset vendor notes that this is only a generic software upgrade, meaning that any settings or specific applications put on the phone by the wireless carrier will be lost following the update process.

The upgrade was listed on HTC's support website as ROM version 1.72.161.3, yet no specific details on what it includes were provided. Here's what the company says about the solution: “[a]n updated ROM is now available for HTC HD2 (Vodafone) users to download. As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience.” The new ROM upgrade for Vodafone's HD2 follows the release of similar solutions for the units available on other carriers in the country (and in other European markets).

Before downloading the software, users should make sure that it is a newer version than the one installed on their handsets. “If it is the same version and your device is operating normally, there is no need to reinstall the software. To check what version is installed on your device, click Start > Settings > System tab > Device Information > Version tab, and note the ROM version, CPU, and Radio version,” HTC explains.

The installation process will erase the data on the device, meaning that those interested in installing it should perform a backup of all files on the phone, so as to make sure than no important info is lost in the process. For the installation to be completed successfully, one would have to close all apps running on the handset, to make sure that the battery is at least at 50 percent, and to connect the phone to a Windows-based computer via a USB cable.
