Shortly after announcing the upcoming availability of the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE tablet in Canada, Research In Motion (RIM) released a new update for PlayBook OS.

Although RIM has confirmed that the LTE-enabled tablet will be shipped with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.1, the company has stated that OS 2.1 version will be launched by the end of the year.

In preparation for the big upgrade, RIM has recently launched a maintenance software update for the PlayBook tablet. OS 2.0.1.668 is now available for download and promises to bring lots of improvements and new features.

The update is about 315MB in size and includes new communications capabilities (email, contacts, calendar), as well as other productivity tools and features, which are meant to enhance the overall user experience.

The update is pushed OTA (over the air), so BlackBerry PlayBook owners might want to manually check for the new software.
