As previously reported, BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion has been busy creating a comprehensive management tool for Mac owners and users of its smartphones. With the beta version of the app
previously leaked to the Internet, RIM has now officially introduced the final version of the management tool, making BlackBerry Desktop Software available as a free download for everyone.
“Research In Motion [...] has exciting news for Mac users that want an easy and reliable solution that syncs their contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes with their BlackBerry smartphones,” the announcement on the company’s website
reads. “A new version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software has been developed specifically for Mac users,” RIM said last week, promising that interested parties would soon be able to download and use the tool for free. Download BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac OS X (Free) RIM explains that its new management software allows Mac users to “smoothly and seamlessly sync data from Mac applications like iCal, Address Book, Microsoft Entourage and others, as well as add and remove applications, schedule automatic backups, encrypt backup files and install software updates for their BlackBerry smartphone.” Interestingly, the smartphone expert adds that BlackBerry Desktop Manager also integrates BlackBerry Media Sync. This enables Mac users to sync their iTunes music collections with their BlackBerry smartphone. It should be noted that iTunes will not recognize the BlackBerry as an iPod, something that doesn’t sit very well with Apple. Instead, the BlackBerry Desktop Software simply looks up the iTunes library and creates a path for the device to receive the content.
“From within the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, users simply select the desired iTunes playlists and the music, including song information and album art, is quickly transferred onto their BlackBerry smartphone,” RIM continues to stress. “BlackBerry Desktop Manager software is designed to run on Mac computers with Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher and supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher,” the company adds, notifying customers of the system requirements. Also noted by RIM is that certain music files may not be supported, as some files contain DRM.
