Recently, Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion announced officially the launch of its high-end BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone on the market in the Philippines.

The new device marks a first for the BlackBerry line on the country, as it is the first smartphone from RIM to come with both a touchscreen display and with a QWERTY keyboard.

Moreover, this is the first Blackberry device to come to the market with a sliding form factor, and also the first one to run under the new BlackBerry 6 OS from the leading handset vendor.

“The new BlackBerry Torch smartphone builds on the familiar and powerful capabilities of the BlackBerry platform to provide the features that are ideal for socially connected consumers while also providing the tools that business customers trust,” said Gregory Wade, Managing Director, Southeast Asia at RIM.

“The new BlackBerry 6 operating system includes many new features that users will enjoy, including Universal Search, Social Feeds and a fast WebKit browser,” added Wade.

The new BlackBerry Torch comes to the market with support for high-speed 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) networks, as well as with Wi-Fi (b/g/n) connectivity and Bluetooth capabilities, not to mention built-in GPS receiver for location-based applications and geo-tagging.

The specifications list of the new device also includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper, with continuous auto focus, image stabilization, and video recording capabilities.

Moreover, the BlackBerry Torch was brought to shelves with 4GB of internal memory, and with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

We should also mention that the new handset comes to the market with the new BlackBerry 6 OS from RIM, which offers a wide range of new features, such as a new WebKit-based browser, universal search, or integrated access to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other messaging apps.

The new BlackBerry Torch smartphone is expected to land in the Philippines in late November, the handset vendor announced. No info on its price tag emerged for the time being.
