While gearing up for the release of its first BlackBerry 10 smartphones, Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion is also making sure that those who purchase these devices will have plenty of features to enjoy on them right from the start.

One of these features would involve the ability to view DRM-encoded content right on the smartphone, the company has announced on Tuesday.

The handset vendor has added support for Adobe DRM for EPUB (Digital Rights Management for eBooks) to its upcoming BlackBerry 10 smartphones, as well as to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet PCs.

Through the use of Adobe’s Reader Mobile SDK, both handset vendor and software developers can push to the market products that come with PDF and eBook support embedded on them.

Thousands of publishers, libraries and content providers all around the world are already using the ecosystem for the selling and lending of eBooks, the handset vendor continues.

“Support comes by way of the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK (RM SDK) maintained by Datalogics,” RIM explains in a recent blog post.

“The Adobe Reader Mobile SDK is Adobe’s EPUB and PDF rendering technology for eBook apps and devices. It powers hundreds of apps and devices which act as the front end of Adobe’s end-to-end eBook ecosystem.”

The latest flavor of the software development kit from Adobe provided third-party companies with the possibility to build their own eReaders that can view DRM-encoded content.

Developers who have already licensed the RMSDK should know that the BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and BlackBerry 10 smartphones are now supported for the building of such software for them.

“Developers can now write apps for BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that can easily download, manage, and display PDF content and eBooks,” the mobile phone maker notes.

RIM is expected to make its BlackBerry 10 smartphones official only in the beginning of next year, while bringing them to shelves sometime in March, according to the latest reports on the matter.
