RIAA Shuts down Grokster Peer-to-Peer

Grokster's legal future is in Mashboxx LLC's hands

Grokster Ltd. will stop providing the software which enables users to share and copy music without permission, as part of an agreement with RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

The settlement established between Grokster representatives and RIAA becomes active several months
after the Supreme Court of Justice had decided that Grokster and other "peer to peer" networks could be held liable if they create a favorable environment for users to infringe copyright laws.

The decentralized structure of most peer-to-peer networks makes the situation uncontrollable, once the content is released over the Internet. However, shutting off sites where users first download the software is one way of making sure that they will not be able to get new versions of the software and thus not have access to the network.

If rumors will prove to be true, Grokster will be bought by Mashboxx LLC, a company which intends to establish a legal and paid download music service that will compete against Apple's iTunes.

Two other popular peer to peer services, WinMX.com and eDonkey, shut down in September after receiving cease-and-desist letters from the RIAA.
