Apple RAID Card Firmware Update 1.0 is now available for all Mac Pro (Original and Early 2008) and Xserve (Late 2006 and Early 2008) systems with the Apple RAID card. The update requires Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 or later and current EFI Boot ROM, according to the release notes from Apple. As part of the update process, users will need to reboot their computer.

“Apple RAID Card Firmware Update 1.0 updates RAID card firmware versions M-1.3.0.6 and M-2.0.3.3 to M-2.0.5.5,” Apple explains on the Support section of its website. “If your RAID card firmware version begins with E, you have a newer version of the Apple RAID Card, and you do not need this update,” the Mac maker points out, encouraging users to visit another Support page for more information about identifying which version of the card they have.

The update improves the reliability during startup and power-loss recovery, while addressing a potential issue when rebuilding a degraded RAID 5. It also resolves an issue that can fill the on-board flash file system and improves battery handling and reporting. Improved compatibility with Mac OS X v10.6 and Mac OS X Server v10.6 is also included with the update.

To apply the RAID Card Firmware Update 1.0 properly, download the update either using Software Update or the standalone installer by accessing the link below. As users launch the installer, an application called Apple RAID Card Firmware Update is installed in /Applications/Utilities. The application will open automatically after the download completes or after a restart. During the update process, one will be prompted for their administrator password and a system reboot. Apple urges users to note that the firmware-update process will take several minutes.
