Nyan cat creator Chris Torres is mourning his Russian Blue cat, Marty, the inspiration for the legendary meme.

According to Mashable, Torres adopted Marty in 2010. Marty was one of two cats taken in by the designer, the second of which died soon after. The Russian Blue was Torres' model as he first drew his Pop Tart Cat Gif animation, and inspired a lot of his illustrations.

Pop Tart Cat gained notoriety after YouTube user saraj00n created a video using the Gif and adding a catchy tune, transformed via a vocal synthesizer. The tune was Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya by Japanese artist Daniwell-P, helping Pop Tart Cat become the world renowned Nyan Cat.

The 3-year-old suffered from Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a disease that could not be treated.

“Even with the medical treatment he received he still deteriorated quickly. I’ve been force feeding him and keeping him warm for three days,” Torres tweeted.
