Following updates to the iLife Media Browser and iDVD (7.0.3), QuickTime Broadcaster was updated yesterday to version 1.5.3. Mac users can download the update for free, right here on Softpedia.

“Welcome to QuickTime Broadcaster, Apple's standards-based live encoding software that lets you produce professional-quality live events for delivery over the Internet or high speed cellular networks - quickly, easily, and affordably,” Apple says on the Support section of its web site. The company continues to outline that QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5.3 supports quite a few video sources, including Digital Video (DV) camera with FireWire output for DV audio and video, iSight Camera, and FireWire-based analog to DV converters (e.g. Sony Media Converter).

Supported Audio Sources, according to the same document, include DV Audio from FireWire, USB Audio (e.g. Griffin iMic) and Built-in audio.

While version 1.5 improved performance for streaming 640x480 30fps video dramatically, while increasing standards support (including 3GPP and ISMA), Apple points out that the latest version (1.5.3) of its live encoding software improves audio/video synchronization when recording broadcasts to disk.

· The company behind the Mac operating system also throws in a few of the benefits that come with using QuickTime Broadcaster. Those include:

· Support for broadcasting ISO-compliant MPEG-4 audio (AAC LC) and MPEG-4 video (MPEG-4 Part 2)

· Instant VOD automatically saves the live broadcast to the hard drive and prepares it for streaming (creates "hint tracks") for immediate delivery via a streaming server for on-demand viewing of the live event after it has occurred

· Basic view includes presets for popular broadcasting configurations, making it easy to start broadcasting

· Expanded view allows for the creation of custom settings that can be saved and shared with others

· Integration with QuickTime Streaming Server for easy broadcasting to a large audience and remote administration.

QuickTime Broadcaster supports Deutsch, English, Français and Chinese. Weighing in at 1.03MB, QuickTime Broadcaster requires Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later or Mac OS X Server v10.4.10 or later, 400 Mhz G3 processor or faster (Power PC G5 or Intel processor recommended for H.264 broadcasting) and FireWire ports, and at least 256 MB of RAM.
