Apple has updated QuickTime to version 7.5.5. The new release includes changes that increase reliability, improve application compatibility, but also security, according to the company behind the Macintosh brand. Front Row users are also treated to an update, which brings iTunes 8.0 compatibility and bug fixes.

On Apple's downloads page, QuickTime 7.5.5 for Tiger and Leopard is described as follows,

This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.

QuickTime 7.5.5 includes changes that increase reliability, improve application compatibility and enhance security.

As usual, the update is highly recommended for all users of QuickTime 7 (or earlier versions).

Recently updated to version 7.4.5, QuickTime added patches for some 11 "high-risk security vulnerabilities," which were only later detailed. The XPMs (exploit prevention mechanisms) are part of the newly updated Windows and Mac OS X versions of QuickTime, which address as many as nine of the respective security issues.

With QuickTime 7.5.5's additional changes that increase reliability, application compatibility and security, this release is even more recommended than version 7.4.5.

NOTE: The security vulnerabilities patched in QuickTime 7.5.5 will be detailed in an additional article, filed under Mac.

QuickTime is a bundle of digital media software for creation, delivery and playback software that lets you play live or pre-recorded video and audio. The app seeks to provide the industry's first end-to-end, standards-based digital media delivery system, when combined with QuickTime Player and QuickTime Pro, according to Apple.

For the Mac users addicted to Front Row's features, Front Row 2.1.6 “provides improved iTunes 8.0 compatibility and bug fixes,” Apple says. Also noted on Apple's downloads page is that this version of Front Row requires Mac OS X v10.5 or later, QuickTime 7.5.5 or later, and at least iTunes 6.0.4 and iPhoto 6.0.2.
