A new feature to help you write faster will come along Apple's next OS

Apple has still a lot to show and talk about OS X Yosemite. There are big unknowns like the future Photos app that will replace iPhoto, for example. However, when it comes to the small features, you can only find those if you look close enough at the developer previews or the public beta.

Quick Type has been described as one of the cool features that will come along iOS 8, but no one has said anything about the same feature coming to OS X Yosemite. And yet, it appears we will get it.

Apple describes Quick Type as a way iOS 8 will predict what you are likely to say next. In just a couple of weeks you will be able to write entire sentences with a few taps, because as you type, you will see choices of words or phrase you were about to write. Apple implemented this in such a way, that the iMessage way is more casual than the formal way you might want to use in Mail.app. It also depends who you are talking to. Let's say you are writing an iMessage to your girlfriends and then another one to your boss. The context can change from one to another.

There's also context depending on a question you may get via iMessage. Just imagine someone asks you whether you want to go to dinner or a movie. The Quick Type feature will understand the message and offer suggestions like: movie, dinner or not sure. The predictive text on iOS will be available around the world with supported languages like English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese Kanji.

Going back to the newly discovered Quick Type for OS X, the new feature appeared first on Reddit. An user noticed that when you type something in a compatible app like TextEdit and you press the ESC key you will get a list of words that match your context. In OS X Mavericks, the same ESC key would just give an option to finish the current word.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will include this feature in all apps. It currently works in TextEdit and it does not in Messages app on OS X Yosemite.

Apple is expected to release OS X Yosemite sometimes in the next month. The next-generation operating system will be a free upgrade from OS X Mavericks and will bring a redesign of the system, menus and default apps.
