A game that shows plenty of potential even in its alpha stage

One lonely Commander mech, tough as metal nails, is alone on the surface of the moon and the possibilities are, at the moment, endless.

This is the premise of Planetary Annihilation, a game that’s clearly based on the core concepts of Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation, which is shaping up to offer a take on strategy that’s focused on scale and firepower.

The game owes much in terms of mechanics to its inspirations, which means that players need to use their Commander mech to create the rudiments of an economy and then deploy factories for mechs, vehicles and air units to create armies that can overwhelm enemies.

The economy is based on resource flow, which means that gamers need to make sure that all their production facilities are pumping units at all times and that their resource gathering system keeps up with demand.

Battles are not about individual units and their abilities but about overall strategic moves and about having a clear battle plan that can be easily executed given the large number of forces on the battlefield.

Planetary Annihilation takes place on round planets and moons and not on the flat levels of traditional strategy titles. The feature introduces new tactical options and can initially create quite a bit of confusion for the player.

I got hit from all directions with flying units early on and I even had problems locating the enemy base.

After a few battles, I became accustomed to the concept and enjoyed Planetary Annihilation even if the experience is by no means feature complete at the moment.

Planetary Annihilation is at the moment in the alpha stage, which means that the team at Uber still has plenty to add to the game in order to realize its full vision.

The final release will introduce a meta-game that will blend single-player and multiplayer skirmishes in order to create a wider conflict that will spawn entire planets and will allow gamers to band with friends in order to achieve domination over their enemies.

Take a look at how Planetary Annihilation looks in the attached video.
