Dragon Age seems to have quite a life outside of the main releases for the franchise and the Remix that has been produced by Pixelante and takes over the basic elements of the game and combines them in very different ways, creating a new and exciting, although rather brief, experience.
The game is a side-scrolling hack and slash where the monsters are instantly familiar for those who have played even a bit of Legends, but the pace is increased tenfold.
Enemies come in from left and right and the player needs to balance health and mana as he moves around the screen, jumps and lunges to take them out and earn upgrades and experience that allow him to tackle even bigger enemies.
The game really comes into its own when played on either Hard or Insane and the set pieces, especially the boss fights, pose a real challenge.
Dragon Age: Legends Remix 01 also offers a number of different playing styles, which means that it does have some replay value, and to encourage gamers to get all through the experience EA2D is offering rewards that can be redeemed in Legends.
One of the most interesting things about Remix 01 is the control scheme, which combines simple mouse movements and the push of just the left button to create a dynamic movement and battle system that, for an outside observer, appears much more complex than it actually is.
It's also interesting to note that BioWare and Electronic Arts are also producing a wealth of other
Dragon Age material, from novels and comic books to a live action series that will star Felicia Day and will launch this summer.
It would be interesting to see whether EA2D and various other developers will pick up the basic narrative of this treasure of extra content and craft simple yet enjoyable video games around them.
