14 DAY TRIAL // According to the conclusions of a new study released by experts at the US National Science Foundation (NSF), it would appear that around a quarter of all people living in the United States are convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
This geocentric model, also known as the Ptolemaic system, was developed by ancient Greek thinkers such as Claudius Ptolemy. It was not until the 17th century that the theories by Copernicus and Kepler finally showed this assumption erroneously. I do not think it should be allowed for people living in 2014 to still adhere to ideas proven wrong nearly 400 years ago.
The study, whose conclusions were detailed on February 14 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago, also showed that only around 40 percent of US citizens know that the Universe began with the Big Bang, NPR reports.
Nearly half of the population – roughly 48 percent of test subjects – are aware of the fact that humans evolved from earlier species of animals. The fact that many people in the US do not get along well with science has been known around the world for quite some time, but this is getting to be ridiculous.
