Ahead of the movie

I am usually highly skeptical when it comes to videogames that tie in with big Hollywood movies. The quality of, let's say, Iron Man the game is far below that of Iron Man the  movie. But Quantum of Solace, the videogame which is going to be published by Activision, kinda looks like more than a money maker for the franchise. And one of the signs that it might just provide a pleasurable experience lies in the release schedule.

Activision has just announced that Quantum of Solace would be released for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 2, the Wii, the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable on November 4, while the general opening of the new James Bond movie is only scheduled for November 14. The game is coming out ten days before the movie.

That indicates two things to me. First, the game is not only a retelling of the events of the movie. The game is said to incorporate scenes from Casino Royale, the first Bond movie that starred Daniel Craig, and will offer players the opportunity to step into 007's role and to participate in some adventures which are only mentioned in the movies. The game is sure to look good because it is powered by the Call of Duty 4 engine. The release date is also proof that the holders of the James Bond franchise are confident that the quality of the game will not be detrimental to the success of the movie.

Activision also announced having put in place a pre-order program for Quantum of Solace. If you pick your game up at GameStop ahead of the release date, you get a token for a multiplayer map pack and if you pre-order at Best Buy, you get 10 dollars off if you choose a James Bond DVD.
