Leading chip maker Qualcomm has unveiled at Computex 2011 in Taipei this week that it would soon come to the market with quad-core application processors for mobile devices.

The company's Snapdragon processors are already highly popular among mobile phone users, and it seems that they should soon be able to appeal to them even more.

Qualcomm already has dual-core Snapdragon processors inside mobile phones out there, such as the HTC Sensation and the HTC EVO 3D, and would bring quad-core chips on shelves as well soon.

For the time being, the company did not offer specific info on what “soon” would mean for them, though chances are that these chips would arrive before the end of the ongoing year.

Undoubtedly, they would not be the first to bring such processors to the market, but they would certainly catch the first train, it seems.

Nvidia already introduced their first quad-core application processor for mobile devices, the code-named Kal-El, which is expected to make it inside mobile phones before the end of 2011.

Perhaps Qualcomm won't have the silicon packed inside smartphones that fast as Nvidia, but it might not be too far behind, and an official announcement on the matter is expected to occur soon.

Recently, the company touted its market leadership through having dual-core chips inside a wide range of new and future smartphones and tablet PCs.

With Texas Instruments coming fast from behind with their own dual-core chips, it was only natural for Qualcomm to try to move ahead to the more powerful quad-cores.

Of course, there's always the question of power consumption when it comes to these fast multi-core application processors on mobile phones.

The high-performance these chips deliver comes at the expense of battery life, which could be a deal breaker in some cases. However, Qualcomm and other chip makers would certainly find a way to resolve the issue.

Qualcomm CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs reportedly confirmed the upcoming availability of quad-core chips, but was not specific on other details regarding these processors.
