We have been talking about Qualcomm’s tablet reference design some time ago. The chip maker showcased it at CES 2014 and also flaunted the slate prototype at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last month. And for those who don’t want to wait until this summer, the tablet is already selling.

But there’s a caveat. Itrinsyc might be currently offering it, but this is still not the model to arrive in retail for popular consumption. This MDP Tablet is actually still a reference design aimed at developers and it doesn't come cheap. The slate will take you back with a pretty hefty $799 / €582.

So if you’re willing to wait until next summer when the tablet should be rolled out into the wild, you should probably be able to grab a slate with pretty much the same specs but with a lower price tag.

The Mobile Development Platform Tablet (MDP) has been created to facilitate app/game development and their testing.

And if you remember from CES, the tablet comes with a range of pretty impressive specs. For starters, the slate comes with a 10-inch IPS display and capable resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Under the hood lies a quad-core Krait 450 processor with speeds up to 2.7GHz fitted with Adreno 420 graphics and backed up by 3GB of RAM, 64GB eMMC 5.0 storage.

On top of that, the tablet boasts dual cameras (13MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera), dual 3D gesture camera with IR LED for motion controls, NFC, GPS, 7.1 channel audio playback and 5.1 channel audio recording, 7 mics for Fluence Pro ultrasound pen input, fingerprint scanner and 3400 mAh battery (which is quite small considering the tablet is a 10-incher and will consume lots of power).

Furthermore, the Qualcomm reference tablet has 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microSD card slot, micro HDMI port and comes pre-loaded with a developer friendly software that keeps power and performance at optimal levels. The default operating system onboard is Android 4.4 KitKat.

The tablet has been equipped with a bunch of sensors too, including 3D accelerometers, 3-axis gyro, 3-axis magnetometer, ambient light sensor, temperature and pressure sensors and ambient humidity sensors.

Customers will be given access to Snapdragon Software Developer Kit, Adreno profiler, Trepn plug-in for Eclipse, Qualcomm Vuforia mobile vision platform and the AllSeen Alliance’s open source AllJoyn software framework for IoT applications.

Intrinsync is currently taking orders for the tablet, but the units will start shipping out to customers later this month.
