Qualcomm’s upcoming chips won’t be feverish anymore

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset hasn't been out for long, but during this time we've frequently heard that the SoC is suffering from persistent overheating issues.

Just a few hours ago, we brought to your attention the fact that Qualcomm apparently tested the upcoming Snapdragon 815, which might arrive sooner than expected, against the current Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 801.

If we’re to take the screenshots that leaked online as accurate, benchmarks have already revealed how fast and cool the Snapdragon 815 is over the previous chips. The tests were performed while playing Asphalt 8 Airborne, a very demanding mobile game produced by Gameloft.

The results show that the Snapdragon 815 is much cooler than both Snapdragon 801 and Snapdragon 810 chipsets.

The upcoming Snapdragon 620 got pitted against the Snapdragon 615 too

You might be aware that apart from the Snapdragon 810, the US chip giant also offers the octa-core Snapdragon 615, which fuels devices placed under the flagship level.

At some point, rumors about this platform being subjected to overheating troubles also emerged, which prompted speculation that the architecture would arrive at a later date on the market.

Along the Snapdragon 815, Qualcomm is also prepping the Snapdragon 620, and the company has apparently also tested the upcoming chip against the current Snapdragon 615.

The folks over at STJS Gadgets have once again managed to get their hands on a bunch of screenshots showing the difference between the two.

Unlike the previous test, Qualcomm is running Mortal Kombat 5 on the reference designs powered by the respective chips. It’s an interesting choice to make, since Mortal Kombat 5 is more demanding than Asphalt 8 and the Snapdragon 620 and 615 are mid-range affairs.

The reference device in question offers a 4.7-inch IPS display with a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution and 1.5GB of RAM onboard.

The phones ran Mortal Combat 5 for 20 consecutive minutes before their temperatures were measured. The model running the Snapdragon 620 registered 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit / 47 degrees Celsius, while the one powered by Snapdragon 615 reached 114.8 degrees / 46 degrees Celsius.

The upcoming Snapdragon 620 appears to be capable of cooling itself down constantly after game time has come to an end. The Snapdragon 615, on the other hand, cooled itself for the first 15 minutes before the temperature started acting funny.

However, Qualcomm apparently managed to fix this behavior with the next-gen chips. Good times are coming.
