Since earlier today I was talking about gaming tablets and the possibility of them becoming the down-fall of traditional gaming consoles, a theory which elicits mixed responses, here's another one for you.
Since 2K resolution tablets are starting to become the norm on the market today, it should be safe to assume it won't take long before we get to see 4K display slates appear more and more often.
Qualcomm has been anticipating this particular trend, and at the Mobile World Congress it has put a 4K reference tablet on display, running a Snapdragon 805 SoC.
The demo provided by the chip maker, showed Gameloft’s Modern Combat 5 running on a native 4K resolution, which translates to 3840 x 2160 pixels (via Phandroid).
Titles like Asphalt 8 and DC Comics Beat-Em-Up Injustice: Gods Among Us have been tested as well, and proved to run extremely smooth, leaving stutter or dips in frame rate, out of the picture.
Nevertheless, since the games in questions are designed with a lesser resolution in mind, textures and graphical details aren’t looking as cool as they could be. But this aspect will be improved with time.
This is probably Qualcomm’s way of saying that when 4K tablets do come out, the Snapdragon 805 will be there waiting to power them. Products running the Snapdragon 805 will start appearing this summer, as the chip architecture is ready for mass production.
