On Tuesday, Qualcomm Incorporated announced the launch of Qualcomm Services Labs, Inc. (QSL), aimed mainly at the launch of new services and applications that would benefit from mobile technologies. According to the company, the new entity should work as an incubator, being aimed at the exploring of new service models, ideas and technologies with immediate impact on the market.
Qualcomm announced that “QSL and its products will focus on mobile innovation by developing services and applications in five main areas native to the mobile experience:
• Communication (keeping you connected in new ways)
• Information/Entertainment (delivering meaningful, captivating content)
• Discovery (personalized and context-aware recommendations)
• Life automation (using digital information to simplify your life and relieve daily hassles)
• Digital to physical (access to relevant digital information to enhance your mobile interactions).”
At the same time,
the company announced the launch of the first services and applications from QSL, including Neer, Qilroy, Tapioca and Vive.
“Powerful new mobile devices and high-speed networks today make it possible to introduce entirely new categories of mobile services, and to give consumers new
capabilities that enrich their lives,” said Isaac Babbs, general manager of QSL.
Neer is a geo-fence based location sharing service enabling users share their location with friends. It has been launched in the Android Market, and should land soon on Brew MP and Apple iOS.
Qilroy is a social-messaging service that introduces the concept of peer-to-place communication, and which is already available in Apple’s App Store (soon to land on Brew MP and
Android Market too).
Tapioca’s Magic Link is an intelligent URL shortening service that enables media sharing on various device types, including smartphones.
As for Vive, it is a a free, friends-based social recommendation service that should soon be released for Brew MP and Apple’s App Store, and which is available on Facebook.
