Qualcomm Announces Low-Cost MSM7227 Chipset

The new platform is aimed at sub-$150 smartphone area

Qualcomm has recently announced the development of a new Mobile Station Modem MSM7227 chipset, one that has been designed to aim at the sub-$150 smartphone area of the market. The new MSM7227 solution is stated to be able to offer advanced processing and rich multimedia while supporting HSDPA/HSUPA for broadband data speeds over 3G networks. Besides that, the company also stated that the new chipset would be able to work with all leading mobile operating systems including Android, Symbian S60, Windows Mobile and BREW Mobile Platform.

“We see a significant opportunity to bring the best features of today’s Smartphones to the mass-market segment,” said Alex Katouzian, vice president of product management, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Our new MSM7227 chipset offers manufacturers an attractive blend of performance and price, software re-use from the prior MSM7xxx-series products, and support for the industry’s leading mobile operating systems.”

The new MSM7227 chipset includes a 600 MHz application processor and also sports a floating point unit. Moreover, a 400 MHz modem processor, 320 MHz application DSP, hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, integrated Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS capabilities, an 8-megapixel camera and 30 fps WVGA video encode / decode and display support are also included.

In addition, manufacturers that already utilize the company's MSM7xxx-series chipsets are enabled to make an easy transition to the new MSM7227 platform, due to the fact that the package pin layout is very similar, while the software is almost identical.

The chip maker also stated that the new MSM7227 chipset was able to offer a small 12mm x 12mm footprint, while featuring lower-power requirements, compared to previous MSM7xxx-series chips from the company. In addition, Qualcomm already started sampling the MSM7227 chipset, and expects smartphones that would include it to hit the market later on this year.
