The creators of first-person shooters, id Software, have launched the standalone client for their multiplayer shooting arena title Quake Live.

Quake Live is a free-to-play first-person shooter involving furious fast-paced action, pitting players against each other into a classical deathmatch arena. The shooter was previously only playable in-browser, a fact which over the years raised numerous problems.

The launch of the standalone client for Quake Live will solve many of the current and future restrictions and compatibility issues surrounding browser plug-in support. Especially with the waning of browser plugin support seen in recent times, this will mean less hassles for the team and, overall, more streamlined experience.

"With the new client, the Quake Live team can dedicate more time to updating in-game features without the worry of how ever-evolving web browsers will affect gameplay and performance," the developer explains over on Bethesda's blog.

The game will remain free to play, no changes to its subscription model being planned for the future. Members with Premium and Pro accounts will continue to be offered extended access to exclusive features.

The new standalone client can be downloaded from the Quake Live official website.
