A new development tool has been released for application builders interested in delivering applications for handsets running under the Symbian^3 operating system, namely Qt 4.7 for Symbian^3 - developer version.

The new solution was released as a development package of Qt 4.7.0 for Symbian^3 devices, and is aimed only for development purposes, which means that it should not be installed on Symbian^3 devices by end users.

“This package contains software that enables developers to install support for Qt 4.7 onto the Nokia N8 and other Symbian^3 devices,” a post on forum.nokia reads.

The wiki page on the said website explains: “It's expected that end user deployment of Qt 4.7 based applications for Symbian^3 based devices will be possible during Q1 2011.”

“The Qt 4.7 software has been primarily verified on the Nokia N8 - it should, however, work on other Symbian^3 devices as well, as there are no device specific optimizations in the Symbian^3 package,” the said wiki article continues.

The new tool is based on Qt 4.7, with QtQuick as a key feature, while containing the QtOpenGL module, so that developers can benefit from an OpenGL ES based graphics system for Symbian.

At the same time, the package comes with the Qt version (4.6-based) that landed with the Nokia N8 firmware release PR1.0, enabling one to revert to the initial version if needed.

“This is the first release of the developers' version of Qt 4.7 for Symbian^3 devices. It's expected that this software will be updated regularly. This software is intended to enable testing of Qt 4.7 apps for Symbian^3 devices only. It's not intended for use in software distributed to end users,” the aforementioned post on forum.nokia reads.

Qt 4.7 for Symbian^3 - developer version comes as a 20 MB zip file that can be downloaded from here (registration required). Specific info on it can be found on this wiki page on forum.nokia.
