Although it has been recently acquired by Skype, the team behind the mobile video app Qik has just announced Qik Video Connect for Android.

This is a new version of Qik for Android and an update to the latest Qik iPhone app.

The application brings lots of new features, including support for live video chat with friends across Android phones and iPhones.

In addition, the application now works on a wider range of devices that run Android OS 2.1 or newer, as well as iPhones, iPad 2 and every iPod Touch that features a camera.

Qik for Android offers improved battery life, smoother video and better picture quality through deep device and hardware integration in collaboration with handset manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, and Dell, as well as chipset vendors like Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung and Nvidia.

According to the developers, Qik Video Connect is the only mobile video calling app to support video mail.

The new feature allows users to send a video mail to a person in case it cannot connect live.

The video mail is available as a free trial until June 1st, as users will have to pay for the ability to send video mail a monthly or annual service charge that hasn't been disclosed yet.

However, the ability to receive video mails will continue to be included for free.

The application has also been updated with more social features, including the ability to conduct live video chats and share live video with friends on social networks (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube).

The addition of a live video sharing and recording app in the Android Market is a big development for the company’s technology,” said Qik Co-Founder, Bhaskar Roy.

Qik Video Connect is now available as a free download from Android Market and App Store.
