14 DAY TRIAL // Serge Hallyn from the Ubuntu Virtualisation team has proposed recently the inclusion of the soon-to-be-released Qemu 2.0 application in the forthcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) Linux operating system.
The developer has already started to build Ubuntu package for the Qemu 2.0 application based on the current Git HEAD, which can be found at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-virt/+archive/ppa, along with LXC, Eucalyptus, and libvirt packages.
“We are hoping to get Qemu 2.0 into 14.04. This is tricky due to the timing - Qemu 2.0 release is scheduled for April 4, with freeze for 14.04 being April 10. However, the drastic reduction in patches carried in the package, given the length of the LTS cycle, would be worthwhile,” Serge Hallyn said in the mailing list announcement.
The 2.0 milestone of the Qemu virtualization software will introduce many important features, including support for ARMv8 instructions, support for AArch64 disassembling, user-mode emulation and system-mode emulation, especially when using KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine), and support for the DIGIC board of the Canon PowerShot A1100 digital camera.
If the developers don’t succeed to fix the current bugs, or if more bugs appear, they will stick with the 1.7 version of the Qemu software. Therefore, if you run a development version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, please install and test the Qemu 2.0 packages from the above PPA and report bugs at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/+bug/1284793
