QWave Capital has invested $5.6 million (€4.1 million) in ID Quantique, a Switzerland-based company that has pioneered the commercial usage of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for data protection.

ID Quantique’s services – based on both quantum and conventional technologies – are currently used to protect sensitive national security information in the public sector and financial data in the private sector.

ID Quantique CEO Grégoire Ribordy has revealed that QWave’s investment will be used to expand the company’s commercial activities and penetrate new markets.

QWave is a new global venture capital fund that focuses exclusively on organizations that develop next-generation technologies based on physics and material sciences.

“ID Quantique and Quantum Key Distribution are the future of communication in industries where security and confidentiality are mission-critical,” commented Dr. Serguei Kouzmine, managing partner at QWave Capital and president of the Russian Quantum Center.

“This technology and this company exist because of the tremendous opportunity presented by advancements in quantum mechanics. The academic and scientific advances of the past are becoming the real commercialized technology solutions that will change tomorrow.”
