It appears that QNAP Systems has again done its job and delivered yet another NAS (network-attached storage) series, one that is aimed at home users and includes three models with 1, 2 and 4 drive bays, respectively.
The thing about home networks, and even some small office ones, is that they can usually make do with a mediocre amount of storage, as long as its centralized.
NAS devices, thus, have proven quite popular in such installments, especially after they gained abilities like multimedia streaming.
QNAP just finished introducing its latest batch of such units, the TS-x12 series, which includes the TS-112, the TS-212 and the TS-412.
In that order, they feature one, two and four drives, respectively, leading to storage capacities of up to 8 TB.
They all use a Marvell processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz, backed by 256 MB of DDR2 memory and, of course, the obligatory Gigabit LAN connectivity.
They will share digitally stored content among computers, especially in mixed Mac/Windows networks.
Furthermore, they can perform file sharing, centralized backup, printer sharing, website hosting, recording of surveillance and multimedia streaming, among other things.
"The new TS-x12 series Turbo NAS servers offer affordable high performance coupled with ultra-low power consumption and virtually noise-free operation," said Tony Lu, Product Manager from QNAP.
"Home users no longer need to sacrifice performance for lower cost NAS; and the new TS-x12 series offers advanced features like RAID and iSCSI support, making them an incredible value for the money."
As an extra asset, the built-in UPnP media server (TwonkyMedia) supports Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming consoles, as well as other UPnP-compliant media players.
Set to start selling in February, the TS-x12 series should allow users to use even their smartphones to stream music, video or digital photos in real-time from anywhere, via WiFi or 3G.
