Intel's Atom has been certainly used in a number of devices so far, especially in those low-end, ultra-portable computer systems also known as netbooks or nettops. However, the performance potential of the low-power processor appears to exceed the requirements of netbooks and nettops, as QNAP has just announced a new storage product, based on the same processor featured in most low-end computer systems on the market. Dubbed TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS, the new product from QNAP is ready to offer customers a network-attached storage device that can provide performance without having to sacrifice power consumption.

“The TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS presents a new definition of high scalability, high redundancy, large storage capacity and high stability NAS in the current market. The 4-bay NAS supports up to 6TB storage capacity which can be further expanded by connecting external hard drives to the five USB ports and two eSATA ports. Yet, the NAS is able to maintain low power consumption by the energy-saving Intel CPU which allows 24x7 operation in the business environment,” says Troy Lin, product manager from QNAP.

According to the specifications of the new TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS, users will be able to take advantage of an Intel Atom processor, running at 1.6GHz. The system also sports 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 128MB of flash memory and 4 3.5-inch HDD bays, for a maximum storage capacity of 8TB, using the newly announced 2TB hard disk drives. In addition, the TS-439 Pro supports dual Giga LAN, five USB 2.0 ports and two eSATA ports with RAID 0/1/5/6/5+spare configurations.

Additionally, the new Atom-powered NAS from QNAP, sports a mono-LCD display with backlight and buttons, which can be used for the configuration of the device. Unfortunately, QNAP hasn't provided any details regarding the availability and pricing of the new TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS.
