‘PwnageTool_3.0.dmg’ out in the wild

The iPhone Dev Team has done it again - iPhone OS 3.0 is jailbroken and, using PwnageTool on a Mac, first generation iPhone users can do a clean jailbreak. The same thing cannot be said about iPhone 3G users relying on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, the Dev Team stresses. There are still some bugs to be worked out. 'PwnageTool_3.0.dmg' is now available from the team's blog.

“This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything,” the team says. “Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don’t bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them,” the post reads.

On its blog, the team then begins to break down some of the rules surrounding these early attempts to break free from Apple’s “shackles,” one of which is highly important, according to the code-savvy folks at the iPhone dev team.

“If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now,” the team explains. “UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release[d] via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.”

As such, first generation (2G) iPhone users can employ PwnageTool to create a custom 3.0 IPSW and restore with iTunes using the modified firmware update. PwnageTool will unlock the baseband, says the iPhone Dev Team. The same goes for first generation iPod touch devices. Using PwnageTool to create a firmware image and then restoring with that IPSW using iTunes will work just as well, according to the team. Unfortunately for second-gen iPod touch owners, there is no support at this time within PwnageTool. Instead, users can grab Redsn0w for an earlier (pre 3.0) firmware release, the post reveals.
