Patching iTunes 8 wasn't necessary, says the iPhone Dev Team

iPhone users who enjoy the privileges of a jailbroken device, but also need firmware 2.1 to fix all those nasty app crashes and poor syncing, can now use PwnageTool and QuickPwn once again, as the iPhone Dev Team has worked around the barrier inside iTunes 8.

Apple released iPhone software 2.1 last week, on Friday. Hours later, it was revealed that Apple's latest update to iTunes included means for the app to recognize a jailbroken device when the user attempted to sync – a small bump in the road for the iPhone Dev Team, who acknowledged the situation and immediately issued a patch. For their tool, that is, not iTunes 8.

“...we figured out a way to combat iTunes 8 without patches…and we’re waiting to see what Apple tries next.  But we think they might want to rethink their priorities,” says the iPhone Dev Team on its unofficial, official blog. “They probably won’t though, and so we get back to the 'cat and mouse' game between Apple and the Dev Team and other third-party communities.”

The team also notes that, although they were able to come up with new versions of the PwnageTool and QuickPwn for iPhone 2.1, the new updates do not address the iPod Touch 2G released last week, “partly because none of us even have one yet,” reads the post.

As usual, iPhone owners will need to copy the application to their apps folder or to the desktop before running. Running directly from the disk image “will cause erroneous behavior,” the warning reads. Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking your iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. Using hacks may render your device unusable or may considerably reduce the quality of your experience using the respective, hacked device. If you choose to download and install the PwnageTool, you do it at your own risk.
