The infamous iPhone Dev Team has released an updated the PwnageTool, the most popular and reliable method to jailbreak an iPhone, or iPod touch. The newly released application supports iPhone OS 3.1 and 3.1.1 for iPod touch, but is only capable of jailbreaking / unlocking first-generation devices, and the iPhone 3G.

“This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything,” an update on the iPhone Dev Team’s blog reads. “Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.”

As usual, the team posts the “golden rule” of jailbreaking, noting that 3G iPhones unlocked with ultrasn0w should only be updated to 3.1 with a PwnageTool-created IPSW. “Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts,” the team warns. “This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS,” another warning goes.

In conclusion, the Dev Team’s new PwnageTool 3.1 will jailbreak and unlock original iPhones (1st Generation), the original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G. Before attempting to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1, or iPod touch firmware 3.1.1, users will be required to download one of the following files (depending on their device model): - iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (241 MB) – first-gen iPhone; - iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (242 MB) – iPhone 3G; - iPod1,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) – iPod touch, first generation.

After downloading PwnageTool_3.1.dmg, handset owners will be able to use the tool and create a custom (jailbroken) OS 3.1 IPSW that they’ll use to restore their device with.
