The iPhone Dev Team warns about certain aspects surrounding the latest version of PwnageTool

According to the iPhone Dev Team, if you’re already jailbroken, you don’t need to worry about entering DFU mode to restore to a custom IPSW. Those who already have a hacked device can just create a custom IPSW using the PwnageTool (or get one from the Internet) and Option-Restore to it via iTunes, the Team says. Softpedia doesn’t encourage jailbreaking.

“Don’t enter DFU mode at all,” the iPhone Dev Team says in its latest blog update. “Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple!” the team warns those who enjoy the benefits of a hacked device. “For best results, use the latest iTunes (9.0.1) — which includes a nice new application organizer,” the post adds. Custom IPSWs to restore to with each device are named as shown below. Users can either create their own using PwnageTool, or Google them.

- "iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw" (iPhone first gen); - "iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw" (iPhone 3G); - "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw" (iPhone 3GS).

“This [PwnageTool] release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x,” the Team’s warning goes. “It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the ‘unlock train,’ simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the ‘3G’ setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A,” the team of hackers explains.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
