For Windows Mobile and iPhone

Mobile phone users who already tried out Google Sync know very well that it enables any handset owner to synchronize Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with a mobile device that runs under Windows Mobile or Symbian, as well as with an iPhone. Until yesterday, these were the only two options available with it, yet now users can enjoy another nice feature of Google Sync, namely Gmail support.

Although for the time being the new option is only available with Google Sync for handsets running under Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system and for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, it is still a great feature, especially since it has been designed to push Gmail messages directly on a user's mobile device.

“Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Sync works with your phone's native email application so there's no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three,” is what Douglas Gresham, software engineer, states in a post on Google Mobile's blog.

Google Sync, as many of you might already know, is only in a beta stage at the moment. It uses the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol, and users should consider backing up their data before setting up Google Sync, as a new Exchange ActiveSync account could wipe out data on the device. According to Gresham, the new feature has been added to Google Sync based on the fact that users have long asked for it on Google Mobile's Product Ideas page and Help Forum. One important thing that should be noted is that the push option will eat up a lot of the device's battery. Those who would like to learn more details on Google Sync should head to this page.
