Barry Kauler, the father of Puppy Linux, has just announced today, December 29th, the immediate availability for download of the Wary edition of the Puppy Linux 5.0 operating system. This edition of Puppy Linux is intended for older hardware!

Puppy Linux 5.0 Wary is an operating system based on Ubuntu OS, but it will allow users to install applications from the Ubuntu software repositories.

Puppy Linux 5.0 Wary is powered by an old Linux kernel, version 2.6.31.14, and X.Org 7.3, in order to provide better support for older hardware components.

"Wary Puppy is intended to be our on-going commitment to older hardware. Puppies built with recent Linux kernel and X.org may not work properly on older computers. In particular, some analog dialup modem drivers cannot be compiled with recent kernels. Another major area is old video hardware not working with latest X.org drivers."

"However, Wary is in all other respects at the leading-edge like the other puppies, with recent applications, and support for all modern peripherals (printers, scanners, cameras, digital modems, etc.). Wary is also built with the latest Woof, so has the same infrastructure as other recent puppies." - said Barry Kauler in the official release announcement.

Puppy Linux 5.0 Wary is a separate development project to the flagship Puppy operating system, Luci Puppy (also known as Lupu or Lucid). It is also an LTS (Long Term Support) release. Therefore, Puppy Wary will see only minor updates, for bug fixing and application upgrades.

Puppy Linux 5.0 Wary is approximately 125 MB in size, and comes with all drivers built-in for scanning and printing, digital camera, audio recording/editing/conversion. Also, it has a complete office environment and a large collection of utilities.
