The latest version of the popular lightweight liveCD Linux distro Puppy Linux is here and it comes with a significant change in the underlying software. Puppy Linux 5.0 “Lupu” is also dubbed Lucid Puppy 5.0 due to its origins which trace back to the, you guessed it, recently launched Ubuntu ‘Lucid Lynx’ 10.04 LTS. Puppy Linux 5.0 is entirely built on the Ubuntu 10.04 packages, but other than that it is the same distro people have grown to love.

The only completely new feature in Puppy Linux 5.0 is Quickpet, a simple yet powerful tool which enables users to install many Linux programs with just one click. This should make customizing the liveCD environment trivial.
Another new feature in Puppy Linux 5.0 is the default browser configuration tool. Users will be able to choose the web browser they prefer for regular use, the options being Firefox, Seamonkey, Chromium, and Opera. They can have more than one web browser at a time and can easily set the default one with a built-in tool.
Also new in Puppy Linux 5.0, the distro now boots directly to the desktop bypassing any login screen. This makes a lot of sense for a distribution of this kind as it saves up time and makes it easy to pop in a CD or USB drive and start browsing the web or doing the tasks you have to without too much hassle.
