One of the puppies died shortly after delivery, the other is very weak

Two green puppies have recently been born in a town in Spain, and Dr. Frankenstein-like genetic engineering had nothing to do with it. On the contrary, it was all Mother Nature's doing.

The two strange-looking hound puppies were born late last week in Laguna de Duero, a fairly small town close to the city of Valladolid, Mirror informs.

Aida Vallelado Molina, who breeds hounds and other dogs together with her father, explains that the first time she saw them she couldn't quite figure out what was wrong.

Thus, the woman first assumed that the young pooches were dirty, and tried to get them clean. It was while wiping them that she figured out the puppies' fur was green.

“I couldn't believe it when I first saw them. I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the color wouldn't come off,” Aida told the press.

Since their birth, one of puppies has died. The remaining one is not doing all that great either, and vets say that, given how weak it is, it might soon pass away as well.

Although this is yet to be confirmed, it appears that the puppies were born with green fur due to exposure to a compound found in the placenta.

“Sometimes, when a puppy is born, the amniotic fluid mixes with the placenta and dyes the coat of the puppy and it almost always happens to very light colored puppies.”

“There are not health concerns - it's really just a discoloration in the birthing process,” said Anna Zorrilla from Louisiana SPCA.
