The United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is warning internauts that spammers are sending out bogus emails leveraging the organization’s name in an effort to make them appear legitimate.

The emails, known as “pump and dump spam,” are designed to trick people into buying shares in a company.

“We have received a small number of reports that people have received spam emails claiming to be from the ICO ([email protected]). The emails appear to be asking people to buy shares in a company,” the ICO warns.

“We can confirm these emails do not originate from the ICO and that we are working with the relevant authorities to investigate this matter. We are advising people to delete these emails.”

The organization advises users who are unsure if the ICO emails they receive are genuine to contact them at 0303 123 1113.
