Mac cloner skips one PC for OS X Leopard compatibility in exchange for using Intel's Core i7

In what seems like a surprise move from the already famous maker of Mac clones, Psystar has recently introduced a new computer, which, interestingly, isn't capable of running Mac OS X. Psystar has made a name for itself just because it provided (and still provides) regular computers that are modified to run Apple's operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Different Open7 configurations come equipped with Intel's Core i7 line of processors, hence the computer's name. According to Psystar, “the Open7 represents the future of Open Computing by introducing the new Intel Corei7 line of processors. With up to 40% more processing speed and up to 12 GB of memory the Open7 is capable of handling even the most demanding multimedia and gaming workloads. Featuring your choice of Vista or Linux, the Open7 has enough configuration options to custom tailor this computer to meet your needs. Add up to three video cards with support for triple NVIDIA SLI for maximum performance.”

A note just under the computer's description specifically states that, “Mac OS X is not supported in the Open7.” Psystar is best known for its ongoing legal battle with Apple over rights to enable buyers of its PCs to run Mac OS X. However, the Open7 now looks like the black sheep of Psystar's product line, as the computer is not capable of running OS X.

It does, however, boast an impressive specs list even for the base configuration, which starts at $1,777.77 and includes a 2.66GHz Core i7 920 processor, 6GB of RAM (DDR3 1333), 1TB storage (7,200RPM SATA), 20x DVD±RW DL Optical Drive and GeForce 9800GT 512MB graphics. The computer doesn't ship with a display, or keyboard and mouse, and doesn't sport wireless capabilities. What you see in the picture above is just a promo picture of the Open7 from Psystar's website.

Softpedia has often noted that while Psystar's offerings seem more affordable, readers should remember that only Apple can deliver the full solution, complete with Software Update support and fully compatible hardware. Still, we can't hold anything against the Open7. Psystar's newest offering looks like a very smart choice for a powerhouse PC.
