An Apple Discussions thread that’s inevitably going to grow in the coming weeks suggests iOS 4.1 doesn’t fix the proximity sensor issues for some iPhone 4 owners. Others, however, claim to have seen the problems resolved, after applying the new software update.Currently 6 pages long, the thread in question begins with user PNAYLOR, who writes: “At work, can't download 4.1 yet, but I'm eager to see if the Proximity Sensor issue will be fixed. This is my last straw, if 4.1 doesn't do it, I'm afraid I can't wait any longer. I need a phone..” PNAYLOR returns with another post:
/> “So I decided to just do the upgrade here at work. Just finished the update and the Proximity Sensor seems 500 times better. I can't get it to fail.”
“I'm so relieved, I love my iPhone, I didn't want to give it back. Its really soon to sign off that its 100% fixed, but its looking like 4.1 did the trick…”
User bobditch is also reporting success after upgrading to iOS 4.1.
He claims he is pleased with the behavior of his phone’s proximity sensor, after spending 34 minutes in a call with no issues whatsoever.
“I upgraded to 4.1 this afternoon,” he writes.
“Just got off a 34 min call and not one PS issue. Prior to the upgrade there would have been a dozen cheek dials. I'm pleased,” says bobditch.
However, starting with page 3 of the thread, negative posts can also be found.
Brian Snyder2 writes:
“I just installed 4.1 and on my first call activated the speakerphone twice, and face dialed a bunch of random numbers.
I'm extremely disappointed.”
For some, however, iOS 4.1 seems to induce proximity sensor problems.
A rather sarcastic RanchoPerro says, “i have a new 4 that i got about a week ago. it never had the proximity problems i read about--at least in the week i used it."
He then reveals to fellow Apple Discussions users that, “literally 2 minutes after the 4.1 update completed, my wife called me and--yep--went to speakerphone. while on a call to apple tech support it disconnected me.”
“so, i'd say that, yes, the problem still exists but i'm comforted to know that apple has chosen to make us all equal by screwing up the phones of those of us who never had the problem to start with,” he concludes.
User fluffhead00 has had pretty much the same experience.
“I had absolutely NO proximity issues before the 4.1 update, and now I have them like crazy. Sometimes it doesn't even turn off the screen when I first put it to my ear at all,” he shares with the group of people writing in the thread.
Some decided they’d had just about enough with this problem, and turned to Apple for replacement phones.
“I upgraded. Phone still had PS issues. Just got it replaced without any hassle at all. They gotta replace it. Thats all there is too it,” ucantcloneme writes.
Many others seem to have a bad proximity sensor still.

And all the spin, hype, denial and obfuscation from Steve Jobs cannot hide the fact.
SHAME ON YOU APPLE! |
| Comment #1.1 by: kingtiger on 09 Sep 2010, 21:05 GMT | I thought it was fixed after the update, and went on a long run with shoulder holds, switch from ear-to-ear, etc. All seemed well. Today I hung-up on three callers. The reason the sensor doesn't work is that is covered with black paint from the screen. If you look for a picture of the white iphone, you'll see a rectangle cutout around where the sensor is above the speaker. |
| Comment #2 by: Swededude86 on 09 Sep 2010, 11:32 UTC | reply to this comment | Downloaded 4.1 yesterday night.
Noticed today that my screen is still flashing on and off and mutes my calls from time to time.
Me so sad :( |
| Comment #2.1 by: Matt on 10 Sep 2010, 18:37 GMT | Downloaded 4.1 and I have hung up on the same person 4 times in the same call. No where near being fixed |

| Comment #3 by: Tpeng on 09 Sep 2010, 14:05 UTC | reply to this comment | Yup. Still have issues with my calls. Muted EVERY call I've had since installing. |
| Comment #4 by: Mine on 09 Sep 2010, 14:40 UTC | reply to this comment | Mine also does not work after update.. still switching the speaker on/off or toggle to address book. |
| Comment #5 by: Bryan b on 09 Sep 2010, 20:24 UTC | reply to this comment | I've had proximity sensor problems since I bought my iPhone 4 on launch day. iOS 4.1 seems to have actually made it worse. I'm so frustrated now. My coworker just bought an iPhone 4 this week and no sensor issues. Bought it at best buy and paid for the warranty, but I'm afraid they're going to want to send it out. I can't be without my phone. |
| Comment #6 by: 7crwolf on 10 Sep 2010, 00:43 UTC | reply to this comment | Same. Had the proximity sensor issue since I've had the phone. EVERY call I've made since installing 4.1 has been accidentally muted. I see NO improvement at all. I'm not happy. |
| Comment #7 by: Amit on 10 Sep 2010, 14:36 UTC | reply to this comment | Ya that's very true please apple fix the proximity sensor issue a.s.a.p the issue of the sensor is now getting irritating please fix it love , the iPhone 4 !4.1 didn't live up to the Mark in case of proximity sensor issue but performance , definitely- upgrade! |
| Comment #8 by: SCG on 10 Sep 2010, 16:36 UTC | reply to this comment | Have had the same problem before and after the upgrade. Suggest Apple rename the product idon'tphone4 |
| Comment #9 by: Nottyman on 10 Sep 2010, 18:01 UTC | reply to this comment | 4.1 Helped the proximity problem but did not fix it. My cheek still hangs up on people just not as often. Decision time for me. Doubt this will be fixed in the next month or two (or ever). Very frustrating - Sold my 3GS be hard to pay more money for old tech. Thanks Apple! |
| Comment #10 by: pat on 14 Sep 2010, 16:50 UTC | reply to this comment | I started using my brand new iphone 4 on Sept 12th. In the middle of every single call, call went into mute and got dropped. Yesterday on Sept 13th went to Apple store in Pleasanton California. Apple Specialist upgraded my phone to 4.1. Now my calls are not getting dropped but while talking, I hear buttons being pressed. After a 2 minute call I see 5 - 7 digits on my display corresponding to these number being pressed while talking. I have been using Iphone for past 3 years and I am not happy about this proximity sensor problem. Will go to Apple store again. |
| Comment #11 by: RalphMiami on 14 Sep 2010, 22:46 UTC | reply to this comment | I am having the same issues. My calls go into Mute ALMOST EVERY CALL !! MY GOD this sucks! I waited for the 4.1 update for no reason! |
| Comment #12 by: johnny on 15 Sep 2010, 00:50 UTC | reply to this comment | mine after upgrade to 4.1 it getting worst sometime it just make calls to my other contacts thats embarassing |
| Comment #13 by: Cupidzcreation on 15 Sep 2010, 05:08 UTC | reply to this comment | Upgraded to 4.1 made 5 calls, each over 10 minutes. For 4 calls out of 5, screen blinked and calls muted, frustrating! |
| Comment #14 by: istariphoenix on 17 Sep 2010, 15:44 UTC | reply to this comment | STILL NOT FIXED!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! I am so tired of this phone…Facetime and retina display and processor speed and all of that are just bogus trade-offs if the damned thing can’t even work as a phone. SO STUPID!!! Yet every time I try to bring it up in forums, it’s amazing how religiously fanboys defend their god. APPIC FAIL!! |
| Comment #15 by: Rick on 21 Sep 2010, 03:20 UTC | reply to this comment | haha the phone is crap. I am so glad I returned mine. I am going android when I am done with my 3gs |
| Comment #16 by: vim on 26 Oct 2010, 10:21 UTC | reply to this comment | Just got my iPhone4 a few weeks ago. Proximity sensor issues all the way. It's really annoying.
Trying to resolve the issue I installed an app called CallGuard. It's really annoying to use, but proves that the problem still exists: during a normal 3-5minute phone call it counts around 60-80 unwanted touches.
I'm getting a bit frustrated with the phone :) | |
