German independent studio Thesetales has announced its upcoming science fiction sandbox roguelike game, an ambitious project titled Proven Lands.

The game will offer a procedurally generated adventure that’s all about survival, crafting and discovery in an alien ecosystem, and will feature complex mood and ambition systems, as well as a deep story to be uncovered.

The developers state their love for science fiction, offering Star Trek and Alien as their main inspiration. As such, the game will present the consequences of physics, biology and chemistry in a world that has never been seen before, attempting to create a truly immersive experience.

Players will be stranded on an uncharted planet and will gradually uncover a thrilling story about three alien cultures, divided into five episodes.

Proven Lands features an AI driven metagame complete with animal attacks and active aliens, divided in villagers, slavers and raiders that will provide a detailed an realistic world, as well as contributing to an engaging adventure that plays in a unique fashion in every playthrough.

Each planet is being procedurally engineered, with deep oceans and lofty mountaintops and everything in-between, featuring a full-fledged topography divided into explorable sectors that feature flora, fauna and quests modules.

The third person sci-fi game will have players take control of Teruo Nakamura, named after a real-life Japanese soldier of the Japanese Imperial Army who continued fighting in World War II until 1974, using guerrilla tactics and honing his survival skills in the wilderness.

The game will generate a sort of “one off” adventure scenario based on randomly generated elements, offering at its most basic a hunt and gather gameplay experience, as shown in the Kickstarter video.

The team has also mentioned plans to introduce some multiplayer modes in the future, but for now they are still figuring out how that fits into their game.

Thesetales plans to release Proven Lands on Windows PC during Q1 2015, followed by OSX and iOS, then going over to Android and Linux, planning to hold both an alpha test as well as a beta test during the following twelve months.

That is, of course, provided they manage to secure the required funding for the project, which is a pretty hefty sum, as the Proven Lands Kickstarter page reveals.

The team has also prepared a proof of concept alpha demo of the game, available on the Proven Lands website for all to toy with. The demo allows players to fight enemies and harvest a limited number of resources, fighting thirst, starvation and disease in a desert biome.

Proven Lands has also launched its Steam Greenlight page.
