Once every 100 years, the Sacred Tree becomes vulnerable for one night. Deadly insectoid creatures sense this vulnerability and use this moment as a chance to swarm out of the darkness and strike at the heart of the Golden Forest. Four master swordsmen are trusted with the repelling of these strange creatures until morning.

The main purpose of the game is to defend the Sacred Tree of the Golden Forest by killing the attacking waves of insectoid creatures. The insectoid creatures will continue to spawn relentlessly until the dawn. If the tree is destroyed, then all is lost.

You can regain mana, health and even experience by capturing the orbs that spawn when an enemy unit is killed or by a magic mushroom. There are several types of orbs: - Golden orbs: they regenerate health - Blue orbs: they regenerate mana - Purple orbs: they generate experience. Orbs are captured by moving into them. Also, using the Gard ability, you can draw all the nearby orbs to your hero while making yourself momentarily invulnerable to any attack.

The game has three different difficulty setting, which will determine the initial maximum health of the Sacred Tree and also how dangerous the enemy monsters will be: - Ko-hai (student): Sacred Tree has 6000 hit points at start - Renshi (master): Sacred Tree has 4500 hit points at start - Shihan (grand-master): Sacred Tree has 3000 hit points at start.

There are several different types of creep wave arrangements. These wave types will adjust to the number of players in the game and the time of day. As the night passes, the types of waves and creeps will become increasingly difficult. Single wave: 10 creeps will spawn from a narrow range of lanes, closely spaced together Double wave: 2 sets of 5 creeps will spawn from opposite sides of the map Triple wave: 3 sets of 3 creeps spawn in sets of lanes approximately 120 degrees apart Broad wave: 9 creeps spawn from a wide group of lanes, closely spaced together Spider wave: Timed release of spiders over the length of the wave Larva wave: Timed release of larvae that spawn into swarmers over the length of a wave Brooder wave: Timed release of Brooders that spawn over the length of a wave Boss Wave: A giant spider boss spawns along with multiple small releases of spiders.

A Stand of Blades was designed to be a hybrid game, inspired by console action games Ninja Gaiden and Otogi. The map is recommended for three or four players who are willing to work together.
