Today I am proud to announce the final version of Protech, a Linux distribution created especially for security professionals and programmers. Protech is powered by the lightweight Fluxbox window manager and is based on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn).
As other Ubuntu-based distributions, Protech is a Live CD that you can test just by burning the ISO image onto a blank CD and booting your PC from it. The boot options are the same as those from Ubuntu Linux, the only difference being the nice logo from Protech. The CD starts pretty fast, and without any other introduction you will enter the main desktop, which has an astonishing wallpaper (as you can see in the screenshots below).
First thing I've noticed is the Opera link (first position) in the right click desktop menu, very smart choice for a quick access to a powerful Internet browser. It looks like Opera was chosen over Firefox, which is not even installed. Not only that, but Opera comes with TOR (the online anonymity tool) and Privoxy (a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for privacy protection).
Besides many updated tools, the final version of Protech has added support for many wireless-cards, printing and scanning support, a new Fluxbox version with a complete re-design of look and feel and a new kernel (2.6.20.16). Other changes compared to the beta version are:
■ Corrected bug Tor not working in Browser ■ Corrected bug on installer ■ Corrected bug on boot (usplash) ■ General minor bugs eliminated ■ Synaptic Package Manager added
Protech's goal is to give security professionals and programmers the tools they need. Therefore, Protech comes with many network security related applications, such as:
