The Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 have been dubbed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, which means that gay marriage can resume in the state of California.

The news has been long awaited by LGBT couples and marriage equality supporters. As I documented, many Facebook and Twitter users rallied to lobby for Prop. 8 to be thrown out.

The latter imposed a ban on LGBT marriage in California in 2008, with a 52 percent majority of votes.

According to NBC News, it has been overturned on a technicality. Those proposing the law experienced no legal harm as a result of gay marriage and, under US law, cannot sue in federal cause unless they show that it has caused them distress or damage of some kind.

“It is not enough that the party invoking the power of the court have a keen interest in the issue,” states Chief Justice John Roberts.
