Hackers close to releasing their 'official' carrier unlock exploit

Musclenerd, arguably the most vocal member of the infamous iPhone Dev Team, made a quick announcement this past weekend - iPhone 4S unlock ‘in the works’.

Those not following Musclenerd on Twitter could have easily missed this new development, as it appears tech blogs are yet to report on his tweet. But, count on us to spread the word even further!

On Twitter, Musclenerd wrote: “Crazy Thanksgiving weekend! Very promising 4S unlock (twitpic.com/7kku4t) is in the works (Not i4, just 4S..that's crazy part).”

Yes, it appears that the Dev Team’s progress concerns the newest version of the iPhone, whereas even the iPhone 4 remains locked.

The hackers are, of course, busy cracking iOS 5 and its subsequent incremental versions. At the moment, there are no reliable jailbreaks either - only tethered ones, or false ones.

And while there are other hackers also burning the midnight oil to come up with reliable solutions for jailbreaking and unlocking the latest iDevices and firmwares, if we’re going to expect an unlock from the iPhone Dev Team, it’s going to be either an updated version of Ultrasn0w, or an update to PwnageTool.

Ultrasn0w is used wirelessly after jailbreaking your iPhone using Redsn0w. However, PwnageTool does both tasks in one shot. It’s also the most attractive jailbreak tool - it comes with a nifty interface and plenty of explanatory dialogs that make it easy to follow through the procedure of hacking your iDevice with no risks involved.

It would be wise for the Dev-Deam to hold off releasing any important exploits into the wild until after the launch of iOS 5.0.2.

Apple is known to be testing builds internally to address several problems with the software, including one battery drain bug that’s haunting users who either upgraded to iOS 5, or bought an iPhone 4S with the software pre-installed.
