We've expressed our surprise regarding the fact that pico projectors have managed to stick around during these rather troubled economic times, and now we feel compelled to do it yet again, since a company called MicroVision has just released its SHOWWX+ LED pico projector, designed specifically to work with the latest portable gadgets from Apple, namely the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

First and foremost, we'll have to mention that the new pico-projector from Micro-Vision delivers some pretty nice specs as far as its display capabilities are concerned, featuring a WVGA (848 X 480 pixels) resolution, 15-lumen brigthness level, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, color gamut in excess of 200 percent NTSC and a contrast ratio set above the 5000:1 value.

Furthermore, the SHOWWX+ delivers a 1:1 throw ratio, with the image size ranging from 150mm to 2500 mm (6 to 100 inches) and the projection distance varying along the same interval.

As mentioned before, the SHOWWX+ is a "Made for iPod, iPhone, and iPad" product that easily connects using the included high-quality video component cable, users simply having to play media from their own device in order to get a projection.

Nevertheless, the SHOWWX+ works with many other devices as well, including mobile phones, notebooks, cameras and camcorders--anything with Video-Out or VGA functionality.

The SHOWWX+ is powered by MicroVision's PicoP display engine, which uses patented laser-scanning technology, resulting not only in good quality images, but also a higher level of portability - 14 mm (.55 in) x Width: 60 mm (2.36 in), weight (with battery): 122 g (4.3 oz) – as well as an increased battery life, going up to 2 full hours.

“We're on a mission to eliminate the squinting and huddling that occurs when mobile device users share content," said Alexander Tokman, president and CEO of MicroVision. "SHOWWX+ is designed to simply and quickly connect to today's hottest new portable devices so users can display and share large vibrant images and video with ease."

SHOWWX+ is available now at an MSRP of $449, which is a rather average price point in the pico projector segment, thus making this thing a pretty interesting choice for iPad and iPhone owners.

The SHOWWX is not a LED projector, it's a laser based projector.
