The development team at Obsidian is delivering a new major update for its upcoming Project Eternity, which is set to offer a lot of details on the Cipher class, one of the more exotic options for gamers who plan to explore its universe.

Josh Sawyer, the project director, says in a rather large forum post that ciphers were initially just a theoretical possibility, then became the rivals of the Dyrwood settlers and were then integrated into the Dunryd Row secret police.

The class is described as a fighting caster, using an ability called Soul Whip to directly drain the psychic energy of their enemies.

Sawyer states, “Recognizable by the purple flames that engulf a cipher's weapons, Soul Whip generates a Focus resource that ciphers can use to power their abilities. Though ciphers begin combat with a modest amount of Focus, their more advanced techniques demand large expenditures of Focus.”

Players who use the Cipher class will need to constantly deliver attacks to their targets in order to get the Focus they need to launch more powerful attacks.

The team then offers a full rundown of all the abilities that gamers will have access to: Soul Whip, Mind Wave, Soul Shock, Psychovampiric Shield, Mind Blades, Recall Agony and Ectopsychic Echo.

Sawyer then delves deep into the actual lore of the Project Eternity world in order to explain how the Ciphers were created and how their history will influence the experience of players who choose the class.

He adds, “Though ciphers' powers are still being explored, unlocked, and debated across the civilized world, most people recognize that their abilities hold great potential -- for good or ill -- in the cultures that develop them.”

Project Eternity has been funded via Kickstarter and was one of the most successful projects on the service and Obsidian has pledged to keep gamers engaged during the development process for the classic role-playing game.
