The development team at Obsidian working on Project Eternity is ready to talk about one of the most ambitious aspects of the coming role-playing game, the stronghold system that was one of the final stretch goals that the community funded during the Kickstarter drive.

Tim Cain, the systems designer at the studio, writes on the official forums that Josh Sawyer has created a solid design for the new feature and that during the final few weeks, the ideas were translated into actual game mechanics.

The developer states, “the stronghold itself is old and dilapidated, and you will want to upgrade it as soon as you can. These upgrades will, in turn, open up new activities and events that can happen, which will make the stronghold a dynamic and fun place to own.”

The area itself will be unlocked before the first act of Project Eternity is complete.

Five types of bonuses are associated with the stronghold:

- resting in the area will allow some character to get temporary bonuses to some of their skills; - adventures will be offered for those companions who are not in the player party; - some buildings can create special ingredients that can be used in the crafting process; - people can visit the area offering quests and items that cannot be found anywhere else; - gamers will also get gold to spend as they see fit.

Players can also use upgrades for their stronghold to get access to positive and negative random events and a prison can be used to keep some of the most powerful enemies in the game locked up, as long as they do not manage to break out.

At times, Project Eternity will also generate random high-level attacks on the stronghold.

Cain says, “You will be warned ahead of time of any such attack, so you can return to the stronghold and take part in it directly, if you want. Otherwise, the attack is simulated and you are told the results.”

Project Eternity will be launched in the second quarter of 2014.
