The actor was an integral part of the production process

One thing is very clear in people's minds regarding the “Mrs. Doubtfire” sequel: only Robin Williams could have pulled the role off and now that he's passed, there isn't one actor out there capable of filling those shoes and that costume. In fact, many don't even want to see someone else pick up the part.

The continuation of the 1995 comedy film had been in talks for years. In 2006, it was very close to getting made, with work on the script having started as early as 2001. But Williams, who has a big influence on the project, apparently wasn't happy with the story so he pushed back the 2007 release date.

It was rumored that the sequel was centered around Mrs. Doubtfire moving near his daughter's college to be closer to her, but by the middle of 2006, Robin Williams was confirming to the press that the project was dead in the water.

It wasn't until 2013 that the project was picked up again, with a little help from Chris Columbus who brought Williams back on board again with a new script. In April of 2014, we were told that the movie was already in production and that David Berenbaum was writing the script.

Now, Contactmusic claims the movie isn't getting made at all, with the director Chris Columbus stating that “[Williams'] performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldy place.” The project has now been “put on hold indefinitely.”
